03 / LIVE AUDIO

Audio rental planned from input to monitor.

Use the input list, stage plot and monitoring requirement as the control documents. Equipment categories follow the signal path.

Define the audio system

Separate microphones, stands, PA components, mixing systems, monitors, DI equipment, cabling and stage communication. State whether the requirement is a complete system, an extension to venue equipment, or a touring package.

Inputs and microphones

An input list should identify source, microphone type or selection criterion, stand requirement, cable path and channel destination. Mark sources that require phantom power or special handling at a high level. Do not assume a general-purpose microphone is suitable for every source.

PA and monitoring

Describe the room, audience arrangement and venue interface without inventing coverage figures. Identify the required PA role, front-fill or delay needs if specified by the production team, and the monitor format for each performer.

Monitoring may involve wedges, in-ear systems or a hybrid arrangement. Document mix count, position, control point and communication requirement. Qualified audio personnel should interpret venue and system limits.

Mixing and signal routing

Choose a mixing system by input count, bus structure, control position, file compatibility and transport format. Map the signal route from source to console, processing, outputs and monitoring. Include spare channels only where the plan requires them.

DI equipment should match the source connection and output path. Record connector expectations and cable lengths as planning criteria, not assumed specifications.

Soundcheck and technical riders

A rider should contain current input lists, stage plots, patch notes, monitor notes and contact details. Soundcheck planning should identify setup order, line check responsibilities and the time needed to resolve compatibility issues.

What to prepare

  • Input list and stage plot.
  • Monitor mix and communication notes.
  • Console file or routing reference where relevant.
  • Microphone, stand, DI and cable requirements.
  • Venue interface and production contact.

What to check

Check connector compatibility, channel capacity, monitor positions, transport cases and documented condition. Electrical, rigging and high-level system safety decisions belong to qualified personnel following manufacturer instructions and venue requirements.
